Peace lily mold on soil is the white or grey fuzz that shows up on the surface of the potting mix, usually within a week or two of the plant arriving in a dim room. Here is the verdict up front: the mold itself is almost never what is hurting your peace lily (Spathiphyllum wallisii) — it is a saprophytic fungus eating the dead bark and peat in your compost, and it is a symptom, not the disease.
What the fuzz is telling you is that the soil surface has stayed damp for days on end. In a bright room the top of the pot dries in two or three days and the fungus never gets a foothold. Scrape off the top 1 cm (0.5 in) of mouldy soil with a spoon and bin it — do not stir it in. Then stop watering until the top 5 cm (2 in) of soil is dry to your finger, which in a dim room may be 2-3 weeks, not one.
Take the plastic pot out of the decorative outer pot and check it is not standing in water. Tip out anything sitting in the saucer or cachepot within 30 minutes of watering.

You water every Sunday because that is what the care tag said. The plant sits 2 m (6.5 ft) from a north window. By late autumn the pot has not dried out between waterings for a month, and the surface has gone white.
Why the plant reacts this way — Light is the engine that drives water out of the plant. In low light the peace lily runs its photosynthesis slowly, closes its stomata more of the time, and pulls a fraction of the water it would in a bright room. The compost stays saturated and the fungus gets a permanently damp bed of dead organic matter to feed on.
What to change
Water only when the top 5 cm (2 in) of compost is dry — push your finger in to the second knuckle. In a dim room in winter that can mean every 2-4 weeks. Skip the schedule entirely. You will notice the surface going pale and crumbly between waterings, which is the point.

How it happens
The plant came in a thin black plastic pot dropped inside a ceramic or woven outer pot. You water from the top and never lift the inner pot out. There is 2 cm (0.8 in) of standing water in the bottom you have never seen.
Why the plant reacts this way — The bottom third of the root ball wicks that water upward continuously, so the compost never completes a wet-dry cycle. Roots sitting in oxygen-free water start dying, and dead roots plus wet peat is exactly what surface fungi colonise.

Repot down so the pot is only 2-3 cm (1 in) wider than the root ball on each side. Peace lilies genuinely flower better slightly pot-bound. Do this in spring if you can; do it now if the compost smells sour.

Pull the pot 20-30 cm (8-12 in) clear of the wall and any furniture, and open a window for 10 minutes a day even in winter. A small fan on the lowest setting for an hour a day, aimed past rather than at the plant, does the same job.

- Do the shadow test at midday: hold your hand 30 cm (12 in) above the soil. A sharp-edged shadow means enough light and your problem is almost certainly the pot or the routine. A soft, barely-there shadow means genuine low light, and drying time is your bottleneck. No shadow at all means the plant is too dark for anything to dry — move it before anything else.
- Push a finger 5 cm (2 in) into the compost. Wet more than 5 days after the last watering rules in a drainage, pot-size or light problem. Bone dry to that depth with fuzz on top points to humidity and airflow instead.
- Lift the inner nursery pot out of its decorative pot and look in the bottom. Any standing water rules in the cachepot cause immediately, and you can stop there.
- Smell the soil surface. Earthy and mushroomy is normal decomposition. Sour, eggy or drain-like means anaerobic compost and probable root rot — unpot and check the roots today rather than waiting.
- Tip the plant out and look at the roots. Firm, pale and springy means the mold is cosmetic and you only need to fix drying. Brown, soft, and sliding off in your fingers means root rot, and you need to trim, repot into a smaller pot with fresh mix, and water sparingly.
- Check the pot's weight right after watering and again a week later. If it feels essentially the same, the compost is not drying and no surface treatment will hold — the pot, the mix or the position has to change.
- Check how long you have had the plant or the compost. Under 8 weeks in fresh bagged mix makes normal, self-limiting decomposition fungus the likeliest answer, and top-dressing with grit is enough.

Think of light as the plant's entire income. A peace lily converts light into sugar, and everything else it does — building leaves, pushing roots, opening its stomata, pulling water up from the pot — is spending against that income.
